Why I workout

Why I Work Out at 49 (And Why I’m Not Slowing Down Anytime Soon)

August 05, 20252 min read

You know what’s funny? I think I get asked this question more now than I did in my 20s:

“Why do you work out so much? Aren’t you slowing down by now?”

The short answer? Absolutely not.
The longer answer? Well… let’s talk about it.

It’s Not About Chasing a Number on the Scale Anymore

When I first started working out at 14, I did it because I wanted to be “fit.” At 18, it was about strength and survival in the Army. Through my 20s and 30s, it was about performance and looking the part as a fitness coach.

But now, at 49, my “why” has evolved. I’m not chasing a smaller jean size. I’m not trying to impress anyone. I’m training for longevity, strength, and sanity.

Because Perimenopause Tried to Knock Me Down

If you’re in your 40s, you know this shift hits like a ton of bricks — the fatigue, the mood swings, the stubborn weight gain that laughs in the face of your old workout routine.

Working out helps me:

  • Balance my hormones (as much as possible)

  • Keep my mood in check (endorphins are magic, ladies)

  • Support my metabolism so I’m not starting from zero in my 50s

I’m not willing to just accept the decline society tells us is “normal.”

Because I Want to Keep Up With Life

I want to:

  • Hike without feeling winded

  • Carry my groceries without thinking twice

  • Dance at weddings (especially my wedding coming up in September!!!) That's right....you're never too old!!

  • Play on the floor with my granddaughter (& more one day) without wondering how I’ll get back up

Strength training keeps me functional. It’s not just “working out” — it’s investing in my future self.

Because My Mental Health Deserves It

Life at this stage is busy. Between running a business, managing a household, and navigating hormonal shifts, stress piles up quickly.

Exercise is my reset button. My hour in the gym is where I:

  • Clear my head

  • Work through frustrations

  • Remind myself I’m capable of hard things

Because I Want to Show What’s Possible

Too many women hit 40 and are told:

“It’s all downhill from here.”

I’m here to call BS on that. I work out at 49 to show other women they can feel strong, confident, and empowered at any age — especially during perimenopause.

If my journey inspires even one woman to pick up a dumbbell, take that first walk, or prioritize her health… it’s worth every drop of sweat.

💪 Here’s the truth: Aging is inevitable. Weakness, fatigue, and giving up on your health? Those are optional.
I choose to fight for my body, my mind, and my energy — every single day.

And I’m not stopping now.
